World Day for Glaciers Webinar Introducing the UN International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation: The State and Fate of Canada’s Snow and Ice. Presented on March 21st, the Canadian Committee for the UN International Year of Glaciers' Preservation introduced the UN Glacier Year and its significance in Canada. This event featured three presentations:
John Pomeroy: Observations and predictions of changing mountain snow, ice and water.
Alison Criscitiello: Contaminant transfer in the Canadian Arctic.
Bob Sandford: The importance of snow and ice to the economy, culture, and sustainability.
The Status and Future of Freshwater Supply in Canada, presented by John Pomeroy, hosted by the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome
This tour shares the historical and current significance of the Columbia Icefield region through an Indigenous lens. Though no single Indigenous group was settled in the region, the mountain passes were used by several Nations for trading, both pre and post-European contact. From an ecological perspective, the Athabasca Glacier plays a critical hydrological role, supporting ecosystems and communities across North America
